Editorial

The Central European Cooperative On-cology Group (CECOG) has shown considerable signs of its vitality during the last couple of months:
We are proud to report that not only have we started and activated trials on the treatment of metastatic breast cancer as well as advanced non-small cell lung cancer in all participating countries, but we have also achieved considerable recruitment within a very short period of a couple of weeks. This is the more impressive, as a series of regulatory measures in different countries had to be complied with, start-up and first monitoring visits were made in all centres located in all countries and, finally, contracts with investigators and hospitals had to be formulated and signed. Finally, also the head-office was audited successfully and given the highest credentials.
The second point of gravitation of CECOG - in close cooperation
with the European School of Oncology - lies in the pursuit of con-tinuing education in medical oncology. In this respect, some suc-cessful seminars have been arranged or are under way, including a
seminar on "Colorectal Cancer", chaired by Prof. Scheithauer and Prof. Petruzelka in Prague on April 13th-14th, 2000, and another seminar on "Urological Tumours and Prostate Cancer", chaired by Prof. Marberger and Prof. Dobrowolski in Vienna on June 16th, 2000. Both seminars were received very well and attended by many physicians from the region. Further seminars are planned and bound to follow (see the last page of this Newsletter).
In order to serve the oncologic communities within the area of the Central European Cooperative Oncology Group, we have not only given an update on CECOG activities, but have also included in-formation from the last meeting of the American Society of Clini-cal Oncology in New Orleans. We do hope that this Newsletter will be received as positively as the previous ones and will further inform you about the development of CECOG, which you are cordially invited to join and participate in.

With best wishes,

Christoph C. Zielinski, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Medical Experimental Oncology, Coordinator, CECOG
